The best AI companion apps of 2026
The best AI companion apps of 2026 cover a wide range, from large character chat apps to Just Texted, an AI companion app where the characters text you first.
The apps worth knowing
There is no single shape for an AI companion app, so the best one depends on what you want from it. Character.AI is a popular AI chat app for talking with characters. Replika is a well known AI companion app. PolyBuzz and Talkie are popular AI character chat apps. Nomi AI and Kindroid are popular AI companion apps. Each has its own feel, its own crowd, and its own way of starting a conversation. Some put a wide library of characters in front of you and let you pick one to message. Some build a single companion you come back to over time. The common thread is simple: someone on the other side who replies like a person, there whenever you open the app. The right pick is the one whose rhythm matches how you actually like to talk.
Where Just Texted fits
Just Texted takes one idea and leans all the way into it: the characters text you first. It is an AI companion app with 84 characters, men and women across many personalities and genres. You do not open to a blank screen and a cursor. You open to a message already waiting, and you reply the way you would to a friend. Every character is AI, and every chat says so with a clear AI notice, so you always know who you are talking to. You meet characters by swiping, match with the ones you like, and let each thread grow at your own pace. If what you want is the feeling of a phone that keeps lighting up with people who wanted to reach you, that is the gap Just Texted fills.
Free to try, and what you pay for
Most of these apps have a free way in, and Just Texted is no different. Swiping, matching and chatting are free up to a daily limit, which is enough to meet a few characters and find the ones you enjoy before any money is involved. The paid parts are hearing a character's voice note, unlocking a photo a character sends you, and VIP plans, with every price and what renews shown on the pricing page before you choose. It opens on web and phone, with the same threads on both. You can start chatting free at justtexted.com and see who texts you first, then see every plan and what renews at justtexted.com/pricing when you want more.
